Sixteen container ships to arrive in Yangon Port during Thingyan holidays

Announcement of Online e-Visa Reopening

  1. The Ministry of Immigration and Population launched the e-Visa Website (evisa.moip.gov.mm) on 1 September 2014. In light of the evolving COVID-19 situation and rapid increase of COVID-19 cases around the globe, there has been a temporary suspension for all new e-Visa applications since 20 March 2020, 23:59 Myanmar Standard Time (GMT +6:30).
  2. At present, the COVID-19 diagnosis confirmed rate and infection rate have dropped. In support of the economic development of the State, the Online e-Visa system will reopen on 1 April 2022 for business visa applications in accordance with the COVID-19 rules and regulations of the Ministry of Health.
  3. Requirements for the application for Online e-Visa (Business) will be available at the Ministry’s website https://evisa.moip.gov.mm.

Feasibility Stuty (F / S) is being planned to expand the Mandalay suburban ring road and the suburban subway line

Hundreds of thousands of kyats were lost in Myanmar exports due to the suspension of traffic on Myawaddy Dawna Taung Kyaw Road

Hundreds of thousands of Myanmar have lost their livelihoods since the March 27 halt on the Myawaddy-Dona-Taung-Kyaw Road, an important trade route on the Burma-Thailand border, according to border traders. More than 1,000 small and large vehicles, including passenger cars, were stopped on March 27 while transporting goods to and through Thailand through the Myawaddy border trade point, which trades most with Thailand.

According to a border trader, the shootings at the border trade route cause hundreds of thousands of damage to Burmese agricultural products every day. According to a statement from the Myanmar Ports Authority, 152 ships carrying more than 30,000 tonnes entered Rangoon port and Thilawa port within five months of the new tide restrictions being extended due to the discovery of a new waterway on the Yangon River.

Yepokegyi Village, a potential tourist destination in the future

Yepokegyi Village in Pwintbyu Township, Magway Region, has become famous for its children who preserve the traditional San-yit-wine hairstyle (a style of hairdo with a top knot and a circular fringe). Children in this village, both boys and girls, traditionally keeps this hairstyle from five years of age until they become fifteen or sixteen.

The name “Yepokegyi” is derived from “Yezalokegyi” which refers to the lake in the form of a bird’s crop located on the east side of the village. The village is eight miles from Shauktaw Village and can be accessed within a 25-minute drive from Pwintbyu. Despite the improved village roads, expansion of schools and the rising standard of living, children are retaining their cultural heritage, the hairdo, which are attracting more and more tourists.

The village is now home to more than 700 residents with the San-yit-wine hairstyle out of the 3,400 total population, according to U Lu Win, the village administrator. The elders of the village said that this traditional hairdo has been kept in Yepokegyi village for about 200 years. Due to the beauty of the lake, the village monastery, smooth roads, young women fetching water and weaving, it is going to be a tourist destination for photographers, painters and tourists who are looking for this kind of cultural characteristics.

Gold trading volume data collected under guidance of steering committee

Under the guidance of the Monitoring and Steering Committee on Gold and Currency Market, the gold trading volume data is being collected, said Chair U Myo Myint of the Yangon Region Gold Entrepreneurs Association (YGEA). If the trading data is compiled, the officials concerned will take necessary measures to enhance the gold market to meet the international standard, U Myo Myint elaborated. There is no accurate data on gold exports, he added.

The officials of the committee, subcommittee, Myanmar Gold Entrepreneurs Association and YGEA discussed matters regarding gold trading and export market data on 11 March 2022. The meeting highlighted matters concerning the gold production condition, trading situations, export and domestic trading data, formation of separate teams to conduct the inspection tour to set the standards in line with the international criteria, determining the duties and responsibilities of the pricing, inspecting the trading situations of the importers and exporters along with the related financial institutions and other coordination matters in respect of the subcommittees.

Agricultural export value down by nearly 20 per cent as of 18 March

Cross-border restrictions between Myanmar and major top importing country China resulted in nearly 20 per cent drop of agricultural export group over the past five and a half months, according to the statistics released by the Customs Department. The value of agricultural exports shrank to US$2.17 billion as of 18 March in the current mini-budget period (Oct 2021-March 2022), indicating a significant drop of $541.3 million as against the year ago period. The agricultural exports topped $2.7 billion in the corresponding period of the 2020-2021 FY.

Following the closure of Sino-Myanmar border posts triggered by COVID-19 impacts and changes in China’s Customs regulations, the export sees a drastic drop in agriculture sector this year. At present, some border posts are operating trade activities on a trial run. Myanmar agricultural products are primarily exported to China, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka. The country requires specific export plans for each agricultural product, as they are currently exported to external markets based upon supply and demand.

The G to G pact also ensures the strong market for the farmers. Contract farming systems, involvement of region and state agriculture departments, exporters, traders, and some grower groups, are required in order to meet production targets, the Agriculture Department stated. The Commerce Ministry is endeavouring to help farmers deal with challenges such as high input costs, procurement of quality seeds, high cultivation costs, and erratic weather conditions. The agricultural exports jumped to $4.6 billion last financial year 2020-2021, despite the downward trend in other export groups.

MoI discusses reopening cinemas

Union Minister for Information U Maung Maung Ohn presided over a virtual coordination meeting on the reopening of cinemas, in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday. First, the Union Minister said despite the modernization of the internet trend, cinemas still exist in every country and some are paying more attention to the cinemas. The role of cinemas will continue to flourish in the future due to the sound system and greatness provided by the cinema. The arts can offer pleasant feelings and entertainment and the activities of artistes can lure the interest of the public. As people emulate the artistes they love and so the role of artistes is in direct contact with the people. The Prime Minister recognizes the artistes as talented persons and professionals and also prioritizes the film industry.

A total of 121 cinemas — 27 State-owned cinemas run by the Information and Public Relations Department, and 94 of the cinemas sold permanently to the private, have been supervised by the region/state governments after the management of these cinemas were handed over to the respective region and state governments starting 2 July 2018 under the 2008 Constitution and the operation completed on 24 May 2021. The ministry also coordinated with the respective region and state governments including Nay Pyi Taw Council to take action against the buyers of 69 cinemas out of 94 cinemas as per the terms and conditions of the contracts.

The State Administration Council Chairman also instructed officials to take serious actions against the cinemas out of 94 sold permanently to the private if they do not show films according to the rules and regulations at the SAC Management Committee Meeting (3/2021) held on 11 March 2021. The SAC Chairman gave directives not to permit the running of other businesses at the cinemas without showing the movies and strictly to supervise the filming in line with the terms and conditions of the contracts. The films are the supportive measure to motivate the public and country. The artistes are also should be encouraged as they offer motivation to the country. The Union minister also highlighted the words of the SAC Chairman regarding the film industry development including the measures to return to the government if the operations do not run properly.

According to the replies of the region and state governments, of 94 cinemas, 25 were suspended the operations due to the outbreak of COVID-19, and among the remaining 69 cinemas, 10 are being constructed so far, 16 under the renovation while 43 do not run the operation at all. He then talked about the importance of film industry development in showing the culture and characteristics of the country to the world and the emergence of proper cinemas for the film producers to receive incomes through their investment. He then expressed the cooperation works with the artistes from different fields, the increase in screening movies between 2013 and 2021, development in film making industry from 2013 and 2019 and the highest numbers of movies screened at the cinemas in 2019. He added that the cinemas will be resumed on 17 April (Myanmar New Year Day) and the efforts of individual business people will support the whole industry as well as the economic objectives of the government. Then, the attendees to the meeting coordinated the discussion. Finally, the Union minister stressed the necessary things and concluded the meeting. The cinemas will resume their operations for the good sakes of artistes, business sectors and the public starting 17 April (Myanmar New Year Day).
